America’s Mountain
Pikes Peak is one of the only 14er’s in Colorado that you can drive up, rather than hike.
Location: You are in Pike National Forest when you stay with Winnemucca! The Pikes Peak Highway is less than a minute from the house.
Pikes Peak Cog Railway
American’s Mountain is known for inspiring Katharine Lee Bates' iconic American anthem, "America the Beautiful,"
Named for Lt. Zebulon Pike — who never actually reached the peak — Pikes Peak is an American icon whose 14,115-foot summit challenges and inspires visitors from around the globe.
Pike National Forest is brimming with wildlife, including but not limited to; black bears, deer, moose, lynx, mountain lions, coyotes and eagles.
Along with being able to drive, you can also take the Pikes Peak Cog Railway. Buy tickets by clicking here. If you plan on hiking it can be done in a single day but I prefer to camp over night along the way.
The Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb has been a long-standing tradition in Colorado Springs and the Pikes Peak Region. The 12.42-mile race up Pikes Peak Highway begins at 9,390 feet, winds through 156 turns and finishes at the 14,115-foot summit. It is truly like no other race. Visit in June if you want to attend.
