The United States Olympic & Paralympic Training Centers are two campuses created by the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee as training facilities for its Olympic and Paralympic athletes. They are located in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Lake Placid, New York.
Location: 30 minutes from any Winnemucca Property in the heart of Colorado Springs.
In the summer of 1978, the United States Olympic Committee moved its headquarters from New York City to Colorado Springs, after winning a protracted battle over who would control amateur sports in America and the country’s Olympic prospects. The small staff settled into a two-story brick building on the empty Ent Air Force Base in town. While Colorado is home to the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Museum, it has never been home to the Olympics.
On November 7, 1972, Colorado voters, concerned about the financial burden and environmental impact of the Olympic Games on their state, rejected a $5 million bond issue that would fund the event. Shortly thereafter, Innsbruck, Austria, replaced Denver as the host of the 1976 Winter Olympic Games.
The U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Museum is also worth a visit. Tours are 45-90 minutes long and rich with Olympic history and interactive displays.
